about us

An artisanal manufacturer of vibrant, handmade traditional curtain holders, built on ethical values, sustainable materials and providing informal employment. This is Kamata.

Curtain holders

It began as a hobby in a tiny studio in Kenya. The purpose was to solve a common problem – keeping those pesky curtains tidily drawn during the day without having to drill holes in walls. It quickly took on a life of its own as friends and neighbors adopted these handy, unbreakable ‘gatherers’.

Today, Kamata continues to grow from a humble, home-grown solution to exploring new markets abroad. Our customers include African’s in the diaspora seeking to add a touch of ‘home; in their décor, African American connoisseurs who appreciate Black Art and a wide range of other collectors of ‘things African’.

Kamata’s unique curtain holders are all hand made using banana fiber in Embu, a small town situated at the foothills of the majestic Mt. Kenya in East Africa. The area is famous for growing the world acclaimed Kenyan Coffee and, yes – bananas as well. Banana fiber is a waste product from the stems of no longer productive banana trees that is still mostly fed to animals. Over the years innovators have found creative ways to use the stems, including making banana fiber cloth.

Sustainable production materials & employment

All our raw materials are meticulously sourced to ensure quality while maintaining our environmentally-sustainable approach. Our artisanal production helps to create income for many crafts-people we collaborate with who can work from the convenience of their homes to provide us with a regular supply of banana fiber cloth. If you closely observe of the inside of any Kamata holder, it reveals its fiber origins. In a small, agricultural town with scarce employment opportunities, we remain fiercely loyal to our handmade process and in order to ensure sustainable income for our community.
